Three tips for safer autumn driving
Autumn brings beauty but also driving challenges. Darker days and shifting weather mean extra care is needed - here are 3 tips.
Autumn is a beautiful but also challenging time for drivers. With changing weather and darkening evenings, it presents new demands for both preparation and driving. Here are three important tips to ensure that your driving is as safe as possible during the autumn months.
1. Prepare your car for autumn
Before you head out on the roads, make sure your car is in top shape for the changing autumn conditions:
- Lights and visibility: Check that all lights are functioning and wash the headlights thoroughly with car shampoo. Good visibility is crucial in the autumn darkness.
- Wiper blades and washer fluid: Replace worn wiper blades and refill with washer fluid to keep the windshield clean.
- Engine heater: If you have a car with an engine heater, use it even at plus three degrees to be kind to the engine and to facilitate cold starts.
3. Pack right for unexpected situations
Being prepared for the unexpected can make a big difference:
- Emergency equipment: Pack sand or gravel, a reflective vest, a warning triangle, a blanket, and a small shovel in the car. These can be lifesaving in unforeseen events.
- First aid kit: Consider having a safety bag with first aid supplies, reflective vests, and a warning triangle.
3. Top up your car's fluids
Checking and maintain your car’s fluid levels should be done regularly all year round and we recommend to checking them every few months. Oil, water and windscreen wiper fluids are all musts to be checked and topped up if needed.

1. Slow down
Take care and slow down when driving on wet roads or roads covered in leaves. Roads covered in leaves can be more slippery, taking you longer to brake, and the leaves may make it hard to see any potholes.
2. Be aware of traffic and roads
Autumn conditions can lead to dangerous situations:
- Wildlife in traffic: Be especially careful at dawn and dusk when animals are more active. Keep a close eye on warning signs and be aware of roads with a higher risk of wildlife accidents.
- Stone chips and tires: Repair any stone chips immediately to avoid more serious damage. Also check the tread depth of your tires; at least 3 mm is the legal requirement, but aim for more for optimal safety.
3. Prepare for all types of weather
Autumn brings all types of weather - sunshine, rain and fog. Keep your sunglasses handy for the glare from later sunrises and earlier sunsets. Make sure your windscreen wipers are ready for autumn rains and your lights should be working well for any fog.
