17-year old may drive a car - but with limitations
17-year-olds who have passed the driving test will now be allowed to drive alone during the daytime
On July 1, 2025, new rules came into effect for young drivers in Denmark. 17-year-olds who have passed the driving test will now be allowed to drive alone during the daytime, which is a significant change from previous practice, where a companion was required around the clock.
The main changes:
17-year-olds may drive alone from 5:00 AM to 8:00 PM
From 8:00 PM to 5:00 AM, a companion is required
Companion requirements: Minimum 24 years old, held a driver's license for 5 years, and no suspensions in the last 5 years
Parents/guardians must give written consent
Rules are only applicable in Denmark
NOTE: Violation of the companion requirement may result in a fine and points on the driving license.
New blood alcohol limit for all new drivers At the same time as the new rules for 17-year-olds, a new blood alcohol limit has been introduced for new drivers. Regardless of age, new drivers may have a maximum of 0.2‰ alcohol in their blood during the first three years after obtaining their driver's license.
This means:
- Alcohol and driving do not mix – and now it is also illegal even in small amounts.
- One beer or glass of wine may be enough to exceed the limit of 0.2‰ alcohol in the blood
- Violation = fine, points, and in case of repeat offenses: disqualification.
The purpose is to improve road safety and reduce the risk of accidents among inexperienced drivers.
