Electric driving costs

What to expect for overall costs

When it comes to overall EV costs, you can expect to save more money over a vehicle that uses a traditional fuel-burning combustion engine. But how much? Whether you're charging at home or on the road, you'll need accurate figures for your monthly budget.

How to calculate costs for charging

Home charging

The cost of EV charging at home depends on your electricity tariff in your region. An average electric car consumes 15 to 20 kWh per 100 km. So, if your rate for electricity at home is €0.25 and you drive an average of 15,000 km per year, then the cost of charging your car will be between €563 and €750 per year. Keep in mind that in most cases, charging at home is cheaper than at public points.

Public charging

When charging on the road, you pay the rate determined by the charging station operator. In addition to a kWh price, the operator can also charge a starting rate and an incentive rate. In example on 'Find a charge location with Shell Recharge' you will find an overview of available charging stations in Europe with the price per kWh. (country specific)
