Case Study: Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP)
Our client required a specialised machine to facilitate safe and efficient work at height for servicing and repairing streetlighting, as well as maintaining their properties. The key operational needs included:
- Capability to work safely at height, often single-manned but sometimes double-manned.
- Mobility over rough terrain.
- Capacity to carry a driver plus one passenger.
- Versatility for multiple maintenance tasks.

What is a MEWP?
A Mobile Elevating Work Platform (MEWP), commonly known as a "Cherry Picker," is a versatile and mobile piece of plant equipment designed to safely elevate operators to work at height. It features a basket that can be operated by one person, with controls both in the basket and on the vehicle chassis, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
Our solution
After assessing the client’s operational requirements, we selected the Isuzu D-Max 4x4 Single Cab as the base vehicle for its off-road capability and payload capacity. The vehicle was then fitted with a CPL P130A access platform kit built to CE standards, ensuring compliance and safety.
Key build specifications
- CE-standard CPL P130A access platform kit.
- Full horn and engine stop/start controls accessible from within the basket.
- Manual emergency pump and electric emergency descent motor for safety.
- Base controls mounted on the decking for ground operation.
- On-board suspension compressor with manual inflation system.
- BFG Goodrich all-terrain tires, including a spare.
- Multiple secure lockers for equipment and PPE storage.
- LED cab beacons, knuckle beacon, and LED flasher units for enhanced visibility.
- Reversing camera with rearview mirror monitor and rear parking sensors.
- Speed limiter and reversing alarm for safety compliance.
- Additional features such as a lockable fuel filler cap, document holder, and plastic toolbox within the basket.
Outcome
The delivered MEWP met the client’s needs perfectly, providing a safe, reliable, and versatile solution for working at height in challenging environments. The vehicle’s robust all-terrain capability combined with the advanced access platform kit allowed single or double operators to perform maintenance efficiently and safely.
