5 Ways to Maximise Your EV's Range

The range of electric vehicles (EVs) is constantly improving. In in the space of a decade, the average range has increased from 120 km to 500 km, or even more than 700 km for the most efficient vehicles!

To get the most out of every refill, you need to take care of your EV. By following the tips in this article, you can say goodbye to the anxiety of autonomy and take the road with confidence!

Take care of the battery

To keep the battery healthy, we recommend that you follow two good practices.

The first is to avoid too high or low load levels. If you always let the battery discharge to 0% or if you recharge it constantly at 100%, the battery will degrade faster, which will have a negative impact on the vehicle's range. It's best to keep your electric vehicle between 10 and 90 % charge for daily use. Only charge it to 100% for longer journeys.

Our second tip is to use fast chargers with parsimony. If you use them too frequently, the battery capacity will decrease. A study conducted by Kia found that eight years of standard charging increase battery life by 10% compared to Eight years of fast charging. This does not mean that you should never use fast chargers, as they remain extremely useful!

Pay attention to high and low temperatures

Electric vehicles work best between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. If the temperature is above 30 degrees, avoid leaving your car in full sun; Instead, try to find a shady spot.

Lithium-ion batteries also don't like cold temperatures : Leaving your car outside in freezing weather will have a negative impact on your autonomy.

Cold weather also means more indoor heating. The more you heat, the less range your vehicle will have. If you are Driving alone, it is more economical to heat your individual seat or the steering wheel than to heat the entire cabin.

Try out several variations and see what works best for you!

Drive safely!

This is good advice for all motorists, whether they are driving a electric vehicle or not.

Reckless driving not only endangers other road users of the road, but also your battery. This is especially true in acceleration. It's understandable to be tempted to push your electric vehicle has its limits, because after all, electric vehicles reach their maximum speed very quickly, but you have to remember to drive slowly.

Pressing the accelerator too hard will have an impact on your range, especially on motorways.

A good solution is to use the autopilot or the cruise control when driving at high speeds. You will be surprised to see how much they can increase your range!

Check your tyre pressure and wheel alignment

Underinflated tyres cause your EV's range to decrease. You'll also need to replace your tyres sooner if you don't inflate them enough.

At the same time, keep a close eye on your wheel alignment. If you feel that the car is pulling to one side or the other, take it to a mechanic as soon as possible. Misalignment can reduce your battery life by almost 10%!

Don't fill the car with unnecessary items

As with any vehicle, excess weight in an electric vehicle reduces battery life. This means that roof racks should be avoided, for example for example, because they significantly affect the aerodynamics of the vehicle and do not promote your autonomy! If you store heavy items in the such as bags or equipment, ask yourself if they are really necessary for your journey. Over time, all these little differences end up accumulating!
