Powering B2B fleets: Ayvens' solution to European charging challenges

More European fleets make the EV transition, but is the charging infrastructure adequate?

Public charging infrastructure in Europe, which is utilised by both private and business drivers, has seen impressive growth in recent months. Just this summer, statistics show that Europe has now surpassed one million public EV chargers, with that growth primarily being bolstered by The Netherlands, Germany, and France - the three European states with the highest number of public charging points. Even in countries where public charging has historically been lacking, the last few years has seen impressive chargepoint growth in Southern European countries such as Spain, Italy, and Greece.

Answering the original question, it’s evident that public charging infrastructure is already more than adequate in many European countries - and the countries that do have lower levels of infrastructure are quickly catching up.

However, despite the impressive growth being seen across Europe, there’s still a level of fragmentation within the industry. With thousands of different charge point operators, the situation becomes more complex, forcing users to juggle multiple accounts, apps, or payment cards. Inconsistent price per kWh charges from CPO to CPO also generate an additional level of uncertainty.

These issues equally face private EV drivers and fleet operators.

However, for B2B users, the complexity surrounding charging is greater. A business operating an EV fleet may need to juggle hundreds of vehicles and drivers across these various payment apps, and this difficulty can be multiplied further if the firm operates vehicles across several countries.

Some businesses are fortunate enough to have their own office or depot charging where vehicles can be charged up every night, but firms who need to charge their EVs on the go - whether that be due to the long distances travelled, or the unfeasibility of installing office/depot charging - are going to need to rely on public charging infrastructure in the future. The lack of a suitable solution for B2B customers makes it harder for fleet operators in this position to seamlessly manage charging activities and costs across a single platform. This hinders efficiency and the potential scalability of a wider EV fleet, holding back mass EV adoption.

Ayvens’ solution to the B2B fleet charging void

Fleet management and vehicle leasing firm Ayvens are hoping to address these shortfalls in a newly announced partnership with charging roaming firm Plugsurfing. The pair recently signed a memorandum of understanding to create an integrated fleet charging solution for EVs.

Plugsurfing’s roaming network, which has already provided integrated public charging services for passenger OEMs such as Polestar and ZEEKR, will be applied to Ayvens’ new solution, granting simplified fleet access to over one million charge points across Europe, covering 500-plus different charge point operators.

The partnership will lead to the development of a single app and portal, allowing fleet managers to monitor and control charging expenses across multiple EVs using a wider number of CPOs. Businesses will also benefit from ongoing data reports, with statistics such as driver efficiency and cost per network, allowing them to bring down the total costs of ownership associated with their EV fleet further.

Following the recently signed memorandum of understanding, Ayvens and Plugsurfing will start a phased rollout of its integrated fleet charging solution, first targeting five European countries: Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. This initial launch, combined with lessons learnt, will allow for wider deployment of the solution across other territories.

“After a detailed selection process, Plugsurfing was identified as the most relevant among over 20 providers to help us simplify EV charging for our fleet clients. This collaboration will enrich our EV offering, making charging easier for drivers and helping fleets run more efficiently across Europe.

By offering a seamless charging experience, we address a major obstacle in adopting electric vehicles. This highlights Ayvens' important role in building a strong ecosystem that gives our clients great value as they move towards sustainable mobility.”
