The 12 golden rules of safety
Why is road safety so important and what can you do to improve it? According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), more than 1.35 million people die each year in road accidents worldwide. More than 90 % of all accidents are caused by driver error, such as excessive speed, driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs, not wearing a seat belt and distracted driving. Road safety is a shared social responsibility, and influencing the behaviour of road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, offers by far the greatest potential for improving road safety.
Here are 12 simple steps that all drivers can take to help make the world's roads safer.
- Fasten your seatbelts
Ensure that all passengers (front and rear) and the driver are wearing their seat belts.
- Headrests
Raise the headrests; they must be in the correct position to be effective.
- Slow down
Observe all speed limits and only overtake if it is safe to do so.
- Keep your distance
Keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you.
- Be vigilant
Adapt your driving to the conditions, especially in bad weather.
- Verifications
Brakes, tyres and lights should be checked regularly to ensure they are working properly.
- Fatigue
Take a break every 2 hours and make sure you get at least 11 hours of rest.
- Driving mode
Activate driving mode on your mobile phone.
- Be attentive
Be alert for cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists.
- Stay sober
Say no to alcohol and drugs.
- Warning
Stay alert and calm when driving.
- Precautions
Wear glasses or contact lenses if you have poor eyesight.
